as you know i dont read scifi but one book that i have read over and over is brave new world by aldous huxley - to my mind this is the ultimate - when you know when it was written (20s or 30s i think ) and look at the things that have actually come about it is mind blowing - i have never read any of his others so do wonder what they are like has anyone read things like eyeless in gaza etc and if so what do you think would you recommend them to someone who has only read brave new world ?

Heinlein...
His early books are easy reads, and fascinating, his later ones... well, I think he turned into a dirty old man, but I still find him one of the best! The moon is a harsh mistress - I keep re-reading it. The door to summer (I think... at least the title in Swedish translated back it so...) quirky cat and interesting time travel ideas, not too techy.
Asimov, of course. Perhaps start with the 'detective stories' featuring R.Daneel Olivaw before you hit the Foundation series. Can't remember the English titles by heart, but you may ask the shopkeeper / librarian.

His early stuff was very sexist (The puppet masters for example)...and you could tell he didn't really have a good backing in real science...
Asimovs stuff tho is good - i also like the new(ish) prelude to Foundation stories...it's an interesting mix of the robots and the eternals stories he had done...

You know, I think you're right about RAH... Too bad, because some of his ideas are interesting, and 'Have space suit, will travel' (again, a guess at the title, read in Swedish only) is the one that hooked me on SF, when I was ...oh, about ten. Recently read it to my daughter (she CAN read, of course, but bedtime stories are still popular). She liked it, but it didn't get her hooked.
Carl Sagans Contact rescued me back to math studies when I had a particularly bad time at uni. The film wasn't too bad to be Hollywood either!

Have to admit I've never really read that much sci-fi. Have read a couple of Ian Banks (or however you spell it!) Been meaning to read some Asimov but haven't gotten round to it yet. I've also read a couple of the Star Wars books, not the originals as in the movies but the ones that other authors have written from the idea.

If you like long stories, try something by Peter F Hamilton or China Mieville.
If you like singe book stories, I'd have no qualms recommending Alistair Reynolds.
