The Good Luck Inn, Welington, New Zealand
Created | Updated Nov 7, 2005

Its one of those places you`ll never notice if you`re not in the know. Hidden between a bakery and a tattooist on Cuba street, no sign out front nothing. Most of the locals i spoke to the next day never knew it existed. All seemingly oblivous to the best club in Wellington
It was a little insiders knowledge that led us to this gem of a bar, and believe me it is exactly that.
I must admit you`re not expecting the best when you make you way down the dark slippy stone steps after passing the big burly bouncer that seems to be the only hint there`s a bar in the immediate vicinity. But once you pass through the door at the bottom of the staircase, well you`re going to be amazed at what you find
The low roof is only challenged by how low the lighting is held, and it all seems to add to the smokefilled atmosphere of this 200 people capasity bar
Now before you order your first round of beers lets get one thing straight. This place does nothing so crass as serve cocktails, they are Creations. The kiosk like bar in this establisment could also be considered a shrine to alchol, if you were that way inclined. But here is another thing the average clientell are the kind youd find outside your local uni arts building, or discussing the current translation of Dante, anything suitably pretensious, and so you can see these people are not going to subscribe to any form of primitive worship.
But enough, youve ordered made the mistake of ordering just a plain simple beer and said "Dante hes that guy from that film Clerks isnt he?" and now you make your way to the dance floor to, you know boogie. By now you should be getting the idea of the bar and you should have noticed that A) these people are not simply dancing they Dance, and B) the DJ, is not the english high street club dj (a bloke with a large collection of chart CDs and too much time in his hands) this guy only has vinly and does not DO requests. The music here is amazing and a couple of nights a week they have live bands, though how they get the drum kit down the stairs must be a feat the drummer would never again speak of without a cold flannel and a tall glass of something to "calm my nerves"
At the back of the bar is what could only be called a lounge area, a collection of tabels and benches where the afformentioned pretencoius few sit togeather and get into heated debates about things that really wont matter to anyone in the morning, but you bet your last NZ$ that it won't be anything to do with the latest ruby score or the stupid amount of cash Beckham has been sold for this time
The Good Luck Inn is a place of cool, and understatement, with only space for 200 of the most chic people in New Zealand. (we even bumped into Elijah Wood there but were too cool to make a scene) And it seems in their case it doesnt pay to advertise, because every night we were there it was capasity croud, till way past three in the morning.
so how did the humble Yahsya get cool enough to gain entry you might ask... the key to it is a very lovely guy called Niko, and his friend Emillio, "just tell em I sent ya, its not a problem"
but it is possible what with all the worshiping i did there that ive got it al hideously wrong and saw the place through those infamos beer goggles, what do you think?
