It might be worth taking a paragraph to explain the difference between Jack and the Green man (ie, as *I* understand it) that Jack is the winter (and thus much more dangerous) incarnation of the Green Man, who tends to be a much more benevolent spirit asociated with plant growth and harvest. Just a thought. Of course, the whole thing is lost in the mists of time in any event, so it may not be as simple as I make it sound.
Otherwise, I like this. Makes me wish I'd gone, frankly, and I shall kep my eyes peeled for next years. I really don't think you can say much more than that...
(As an aside, you would probably enjoy Robert Holdstock's Mythago Wood books, and in particualr the second and third volumes, Lavondyss and The Hollowing, which have some very interesting (and sometimes scary) stuff about Jack, the Green Man and the Fimbral Wolves of Winter...)

Thanks for commenting I appreciate it.
A paragraph on Jack and the Green Man... Hmm. I can see why it's a good idea, but as I said in the PR thread, I've tried to steer clear of the meaning behind in the festival for fear of getting bogged down in reems about the Green Man character, I don't want to write a monster entry on the subject, I cant see how to cover the subject briefly! An entry on the Green Man would be huge, and would be hard to do the subject justice in a paragraph or to if convinced me something is needed tho', it's just a matter of *how* let me think on...
You'll have to wait 'till next May Day to experience it- but there's always its opposite number on the Winter Solstice, the Bonfire.

The Green manis a huge subject, which is why Mina and i never got round to a joint entry we thought about on The Green Man and associated stuff...

Associated is correct I think That's the problem you see- once you touch on it, it's hard not to go into detail. Somehow a paragraph along the lines of
"The Green Man is an ancient figure, usually thought to represent the spirit of the forest, both Herne the Hunter and Robin Hood are considered by many to be aspects of him, and Jack of the Green is interpreted as the Winter, and thus more dangerous, side of the Green Man."
doesn't seem to do him justice...

'An ancient mythical figure'? Perhaps just me being a pedant, but it does seem to cover the basic facts, I'd have said.
Pity you can't link to Projects. Nexus & did Arthurian legends and I'm sure he did Gawain and the Green Knight...

Hmmm, if you think that wouldn't look too superfical, I'll see if I can find a place in the entry it'll fit. Cheers mate

Yes, it *is* superficial, but your entry isn't about the Green man, it's about a festival. Getting bogged down in details is a recipe for madness...

The background detail debate is one I have with myself regularly. My piece on Rorke's Drift is still bogged down in the 'how much detail do you need about the Second Zulu War/Isandwhalna' thing as we speak...
