A Conversation for Project: The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band

Desperately needed!

There's a dearth of good musical parody these days. When you think of the limp insipid things the girls use to finish every episode of that frustrastingly patchy comedy show "Smack the Pony", thoughts turn to Innes and Stanshall and the bang-on parody of the Bonzo Band. The way "Gorilla" manages to pastiche and send up not just trad jazz and that particularly constipated sound of British dance bands of the twenties and thirties, but also manages a fair stab at Elvis Presley ("Death Cab for Cutie")Tony Bennett ("I left my heart...")and current Sixties chart music ("Piggy Bank Love" - oddly evocative, but never been sure of exactly which group is being sent up - the Tremoloes? Manfred Mann?)

Eric Clapton gets a slapping on "Keynsham" - "Can Blue Men Sing The Whites?" and there's a certain go at Arthur and his band Love.

Hmm, maybe I should go through the album listings track-by-track and pick out what's being parodied and why and how, if the researchers are happy with that...

But this is one fine project!
