...between a cold and the 'flu is that everyone feels sorry for you when you have the latter, but nobody cares if you get the former. It therefore follows that most people claim to have the 'flu at the first sign of a runny nose.
As far as treatment is concerned, my old granny (and probably everyone else's old granny) used to say that a cold would take a week to get better if you did nothing about it, but if you treated it, you could get rid of it in seven days. Probably still true.
