This, like a priest, nun or birdwatcher, is a person who has answered a call to fulfil a role others cannot. Somebody for whom there was a pre-destined path for their special skills - a vocation.

The Teacher is the only adult who can understand the adolescent, and interpret the hundreds of signs and codes involved in communication with these young creatures. This has led to claims that teachers are in fact androids rather than real humans. This would account for their infinite patience, their pallid skin tones, and their apparent inability to update their fashion sense in line with the rest of the world. However, a major selling point is that they are so easy to employ that even a child can operate them.
