Birdwatcher

1 Conversation

A person, usually unmarried, who is fanatical about observing our feathered friends in the wild. They are commonly known as 'Twitchers' because of the subtle muscle spasms which tend to afflict their seized bodies after hours spent crouched in unfeasible positions in fields, trees and hides, awaiting the arrival or sighting of a bird suspected of having become lost on a routine migration flight.

National Wildlife organisations have taken pity on the Twitcher and have established well-camouflaged huts, called hides, with tiny slits in the front overlooking favourite sites, in which these individuals may sit in order to remain hidden from view of the birds. It hasn't yet occurred to the humble Twitcher that this is a strategy developed by the Birds themselves, to enable them to sneak by unnoticed round the back of the hides, and continue with their private lives in private.

A famous Birdwatcher who attempted to alert the world to the hitherto unknown intelligence of birds was a man called Alfred Hitchcock. Unfortunately his enlightening documentary on the results of one too many invasions of bird-privacy was mistaken for a work of fiction, and Alfred's life took on a whole new dimension. As a result of his new found popularity he turned his back on his old Twitcher friends and set about making other documentaries about his former life; namely Psycho, Rear Window, and The Thirty-Nine Steps.
