Couldn't agree more. I can count but this doesn't add up. Personally I feel a bit grieved by the whole ban-thing. After all: who where the first 'community-settlers' here? Were we not the ones who showed the BBC that we did not have to be pre-moderated? That we can take care of ourselves and h2g2?

This is condescending. If the BBC is so afraid of the political fall-out why did they even start with online-communities?

All topics are equal but some topics are more equal than the rest?

And now I'm off to think about this that's been on my page for the last two years...and whether I really still want it there. smiley - sadface

Was it Bush or Cheney who said we should be prepared for the possibility of the "War on Terror" lasting beyond our lifetimes? BBC sites may remain effectively broken for certain topics of discussion from time to time across the rest of our lives.

I've risen the question of how long this will last in the announcements page http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/F77636?thread=258423 Go and bagder! ;) Ste

Have you all seen this? A1006354 Conflict Moderation Policy Proposal

They're doing good stuff, getting input from Ashley on how to write a proposal for better ways to let us talk war on h2g2 while satisfying BBC's fear and sensitivity about the terror war.

But it irks me that Spook's petition gets dissed or ignored while a "constructive solution" gets official guidance on how it could best be shaped for presentation to the higher powers. Clearly the Italics believe that alternate solutions should be tried, or else why would they waste time commenting on whoami's proposal? The disturbing thing is that solving a problem as big as this is left to us, instead of being authored and put forward by the Italics.

I guess they're doing the best they can with what they've been given to work with. Realpolitik and all that.

So of course I got carried away and wrote another silly piece about it.

The petition was taking too hard a line on the H2G2 editors for a lot of poeple attacking the messengers more than the message. Unfortunately there is too much politics involved and that needs to have a carefully measured and well penned approach to point out a sensible, reasoned responce should any more elephnats be threatened.

Oh I agree, I don't believe this is h2g2-policy, it is BBC-policy. No need to go and criticize the towers, this must have been decided by someone higher up who still doesn't know what h2g2 is capable of and fears the worst.
