Why not potato? It makes a wonderful sound when mumbled by a large number of people at the same time.
It is a very scary game, but great, great fun!

There's a rumour that in crowd scenes in films the extras are told to say 'rhubarb', maybe that would be a good replacement.

Rhubarb does work very well for crowd scenes, as long as one isn't too obvious about it...
Blood Rhubarb? Hmm....

I guess as long as you vary your tone of voice.
Like in 'Being John Malkovich'. Or that episode of the Simpsons where Mr Burns could only say 'Homer Simpson'.
Blood Rhubarb makes too much sense.
