Why will there be two special points and not just one?
For instance, take a plane and some constant vector field, then fold the plane into a punctured sphere and extend the vector field to the whole sphere by 0 on the puncture. Why doesn't this construction work?

Good question. I can't see anything wrong with what you've said, so I'll see can I find where I read that there will be two "nodes".

Oops, and the Front Page calls it 'Hairy Ball Theorum'. While it is a perfectly acceptable pun in French, I strongly suspect a typo here.
