A Conversation for Wonderful Rivers

The Ouse is, probably, the best river ever, It has a great name and flows through some very pretty countryside and on the 28 of March, 1941 Virginia Woolfe loaded herself down with rocks and drowned in it. What more could any river want?

I'm also Very fond of the Taff which goes past the end of my street.

Which Ouse?
There are 3...
The Great Ouse (Northamptonshire to The Wash)
The Ouse- Swaledale to The Humber via York.
Or the one that goes from Sussex to the English Channel?

I personally like the middle one, good boat trips and booze cruises on the York stretch. Although it is in the habit of flooding the Kings Arms!smiley - erm

I travelled the Ouse from Selby through York to the River Ure last Sunday on my narrowboat - it was simply delightful. Wildlife, views, everything. Peed it down most of the day, admittedly. Why does it change its name to (or from) the Ure?

Whereabouts did Woolf do herself in, and was she found or did she pootle out to sea in suitably romantic fashion?

She did the dead roundabouts Rodmell in Sussex. Washed up not too far downriver. What has always amazed me is that she tried it a few days earlier and came home dripping wet. You'd have thought someone would have said 'hey, woolfie, how'd you get so soggy' or somesuch.

The Ouse bridge in York reminds me of many drunken evenings at Ziggy's in my sixth form years. (Ziggy's is a grotty nightclub in York that hosts a great alternative night on Tuesdays that's perfect for underage moshers.)

Speckly ... is that the Taff that goes through Bute Park and down past the Castle? I love it too, especially the cable-stayed pedestrian bridge up by Llys Tal-y-Bont (Maindy).

Watch out for Weil's Disease.

Yep, that's the one.
The wier at Radyr is lovely too. And the train ride from Cardiff to Ponty, the river runs along with the train tracks in a few places and there's a great view of the wier just before Radyr station.

Well I live in Cardiff too. I was walking along a part of the Taff trail only the other day.

But really I miss the lazy meanderings and water-meadows of the Itchen near Winchester in Hampshire. (That area still feels like 'home' to me - since I lived all my formative years near there)
