ahh, but see my post this topic re heather mckay...
and there are other freaks, like donald bradman, abebe bakila [sp?], st george rugby league team (not strictly sports-'person', of course) who won 17 consecutive league titles!! and australia's louise sauvage, a wheelchair athlete, is immense in her domination of her events...
but this topic is fraught with the imponderables - comparing cross-sport and intra-eras! bedevilled....!!

Plus, at the beginning of his career he was having to overcome drug-boosted East German crews (when the GDR had a systematic doping programme for all their sports), and at the end he was having to overcome diabetes.
