"outwith" was probably meant to be "outside".
PS with a special elliptical core it is possible to change the frequency of light travelling in an optical fibre. Joining optical fibres together is another interesting area.

It's not a typo. 'Outwith' basically means 'outside' or 'beyond' and is a Scottish way of saying 'outside'. The Researcher is Scottish so that probably explains it!

I saw you had a scheme somewhere for having translators on the site, eg French and German. Do we need a Scottish-English translator too?
