Holy Land

During the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries Europeans spread across North America displacing the indigenous people who were already living there. When these natives fought back, often using terrorist tactics, the European response was to attack them with their superior military technology. The defeated peoples were confined to reserves and were promised food and other supplies in return for keeping the peace. More often than not these promises were not fulfilled.
Today, in the 'Holy Land' much the same situation is taking place. Israel is accepting immigrants from Russia who have a minimum of one Jewish grandparent. The immigrants do not have to be members of the Jewish faith themselves. They often end up in the settlements on Palestinian land. By increasing their population and settling Palestinian lands with Israelis, they hope to make permanent the acquisition of these territories.
One major difference between these two examples is that the original North American people had no outside assistance in their battles with the Europeans. The Palestinians do have outside help. Unless the Israelis can be induced to remove their settlements from Palestinian territory, the war appears likely to go on indefinitely, and it's destabilizing effect spreads well beyond the Middle East.

I rather like this analogy, especially because the American Indians eventually started pursuing their legal claims peacefully, with increasing success over time.

But I disagree with the original North Americans having no support in their battles against Europeans; for hundreds of years, other Europeans were almost always ready to give support against their rivals. Only after this support dried up, did the North American military cause become untenable.

And that leads to another way the "Holy Land" situation might stabilize. If the regional powers ever agree to stop using the Palestinians as violent proxies, the conflict will have to resort to non-violence the same way as it did in North America.

Yes, the European colonizers did arm some of the American peoples in order to achieve their own ends -- English against French, French against English, Mexicans against Texans, etc.. The best interests of the natives was not uppermost in their minds, and that was what I was thinking of when I said the Indians did not have outside help. They weren't being helped, they were being exploited. To some extent the same thing is true of the Palestinians.
