Remembrance Sunday
Silence in the crowd as the parade flowed round the war memorial. Autumn sunshine splashed the garden with colour, glinted on trumpets. Flag and wreath bearers took their places: old soldiers, chests laden with medals, councillors, cadets and guides. I thought of my grandfather, killed in the trenches of Northern France. My mother evacuated children from Coventry, only to see them return before the bombs fell. I thought of those children as I watched two little boys lower a blue flag. |
