I read recently about someone known only as Harriet Davies http://www.silverrainbows.com/ewExternalFiles/vintage_cheddar_03.pdf who served in the Confederate Navy during the American Civil War after her husband died.
After serving on the CSS Alabama, Davies went to Warrington, near Liverpool in the UK, to work as a labourer but was several times arrested for drunkenness.
