A feminine counterpart for the 'dandy' was the 'dowdy'.
Though by the middle 20th century with the radical transformations of feminine fashions of the time, the term 'dowdy' had picked up connotations of 'old fashioned', the dowdy style throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries was the height of fashion with the affluent.
