- What happened to popes John XXIII and John Paul II in April? They became saints. (A promotion from deceased Pope.)
- What happened to Niwatthamrong Boonsongpaisan in May? He was deposed. (In Thailand.)
- What were all those Germans doing in Brazil in June and July? Making noise, and winning the World Cup.
- What caused most concern in Africa all year? Ebola virus.
- Why was the World Summit of Peace Laureates suspended in September? South Africa wouldn't let the Dalai Lama in (again).
