Willem reads this column. He also writes, as Post readers know. Recently, he came up with a fascinating writing challenge that he asked me to share with Post friends. So here goes. Let the imagining begin.

The Challenge

One day, in a large crowd – details matter not – one man glimpses another. He does a double-take. He looks at the face ... his own face goes white. 'It's you!' he says. The other man notices ... looks at the first man, puzzles for a moment – then goes red in the face.
'IT'S YOU!' he exclaims. He storms at the first man, who turns tail and runs away as fast as he can.



Please provide a possible explanation for the situation, given this one bit of information: neither man has seen the other before this moment.
