What did the Romans do, if they had to write down a number larger than several Ms?
Our teacher told us that there musn't be more than 3 same numbers in a rowsmiley - smiley, funny that Romans used their numbers differentlysmiley - laugh

Gnomon - time to move on

I StarSeeker! I don't know what the Romans did for large numbers. It's certainly true that they avoided the "subtractive" numbers such as IV and XL, but according to Wikipedia they did occasionally use this form in everyday writing. So as usual, it is more complicated than most people think.

Hello Gnomon!smiley - smiley
I would use IX if I could avoid writing XXXX this way.smiley - smiley
Or IM instead of DCCCCLXXXXIIIIIIIII (I hope I got it right)
Anyway, is it even allowed to subtract I from M, or alway just the next smaller number?
I'll see what is on Wikipedia, but never seem to get far...

I wouldn't mind if chocolate was used as moneysmiley - smiley.
But I'm sure the consequences would be horrible!
