A Haunting Experience

Look-a here: Magwitch carved us some jack-o-lanterns. Sorry, KB, we were out of turnips. This cheery reminder is here to tell you that in some places, 31 October is Halloween – ancient Celtic new year. Head over to the Isle of Man for some gingerbread and turnip-carving, or go door-to-door with the North Americans, who think it's all about sweets. (After all, you can thank the Columbian Exchange for that teeth-rotting chocolate.)

Our contributors have outdone themselves this time. We've got Halloween goodies galore. There's humour, and art, and lots to read about. Try your hand at the spooky quiz.

Now, we know some of you are of a nervous disposition. Just in case you find all of this scary stuff a bit much, we've included the statutory h2g2 Post warning. Caveat lector, as usual.

There are sensible items in this week's issue, as well. We tinfoil hat types don't have it all our own way. Willem's got some completely non-spooky wildlife to show you. And our benjaminpmoore is ready to set all those silly people straight who seem to think Halloween is a good time for jokes at other people's expense. There's never a good time for that.
