During the fighting in Yugoslavia, the Russians intervened in support of Serbia at a crucial point. British forces moving to take a strategic airbase were pipped to it by the Russians. While both sides were keen to avoid open hostilities and all were technically there as part of the same United Nations mandate, it was clear the Russians had a seperate agenda. The airbase might have been a flash point for fighting. The American ground commander was not aware of these political undertones, and ordered the British commander, General Michael Jackson, to kick the Russians off that godamm airbase. Jackson, a shrwder man, and anyway more in touch with the difficult situation on the ground, refused outright with the words
:Only odd-numbered world-wars begin in Yugoslavia. And I'm damned if I'm starting World War Three for you."
