Oddity of the Week: Santa and the New Year

A Christmas Greeting from 1896.
Santa and the New Year
Did you ever wonder what Santa looked like before the internet age? Was he always in need of a diet? Yes. But back in the old days, children, he, er, imbibed.
In this 1896 Puck cover, the jolly old elf appears to be tying one on with the infant New Year. We're sure this breaks any number of local ordinances these days, including 'contributing to the delinquency of a minor', but since it's historical, we'll just enjoy the picture rather than calling the cops.
Here's wishing you a very Happy Christmas 2012!
