I have this on my wishlist but up to now I've been reluctant to buy it because I'm not sure it won't spoil my enjoyment of having read the books.
It's a bit shocking that he confesses to pushing the captain - I always thought that one of the strengths of the Hornblower novels is that what really happened is never revealed, and that while he is obviously "the good guy" Hornblower himself is sometimes more shades of grey than just that.

The secret is to remember that both are pure fiction, so one should not affect your enjoyment of the other. If there is any doubt in your mind I recommend you make sure to read the 'Hornblower Companion' first. As Hornblower is not real, neither is the confession. I included it as not only one of the most memorable parts of the book. but also as an example of how detailed it is. I may have to do another read myself
