A Conversation for ORP Blyskawica and the Cowes Blitz

ORP Blyskawica

Bluebottle

My maternal grandfather worked as a shipbuilder at J Samuel White's circa 1933-1939, the Blyskawica was built there 1935-1937, so there's a good chance (but I don't know for certain) he helped build her.

My paternal grandfather was in Cowes in May 1942 on the day of the Cowes Blitz, when 160 German bombers attacked the town. Cowes was, of course, gallantly defended by the anti-aircraft guns of the Blyskawica. If Blyskawica wasn't there, there's a chance that my grandfather would have died, which would mean I wouldn't exist.
