Interesting. I remember very well that the first time I went to Southern Spain I had expected Flamenco to be somewhat ossified, almost preserved like a fly in amber, but was shocked (and very pleased) to finsd that it was still alive and well. One of my favourite memories of Seville was a half hour spent in the company of five guys who were simply singing and playing for the fun of it in a local bar.
As top the 'modernization' of flamenco, like the blues, that's a bit analogous to attempting to stop a jumbo with a butterfy net. All art forms develop - in the case of flamenco it is teling that probably it's best jknown practitioner, Paco de Lucia is both a staunch traditionalist and a radical experimenter. When I get home I'l have a look through my cd's for a few of the other artists and albums that I brought back with me, most of whom represent the 'modern' side of flamenco, and do it very well.

And now there's YouTube.
I'd much rather use a BBC site, though.
