Mort has no chance at ever finding a trade, and at the apprentices fayre, to his father's dismay he is not picked, until the last moment, just before the bell tolls. Mort isn't having just any old apprentiship - oh no, because the person who's teaching him isn't a person - he's a personification, and an anthropomorphic one at that. Mort is going to learn the trade of death
