I've heard rumors that John Lennon got that distinctive sound his voice has on the verses of this song by taking a shot of helium before singing each verse. I don't know whether or not this is true -- sources differ -- but I can tell you that his voice definitely seems to lose the high ethereal quality as the verse goes on, then gets it back after the chorus.
