It seems the marking method was the preferred method of the Famous Five and Famous Friends (Reference: Enid Blyton et al.). Since there is plenty of evidence that they all eventually found their way out of mazes, maze-like tunnels and related structures (and not without stumbling across one or two treasure or other interesting situations) I would definitely give the marking method the 5 star (*****) award regarding evidence of a-maze-ing scientific research.
