A Conversation for Joan of Arc and the Role of Medieval Women
Joan of Arc Memorial

This memorial is located in Winchester Cathedral. It commemorates Bishop of Winchester, Cardinal Beaufort, who sentenced Joan to death for heresy. She was canonised in 1920 and in 1923 Winchester Cathedral had this statue of her constructed, guarding Beaufort's tomb (symbolising forgiveness, peace and love etc).
When we were given permission for this photograph from Winchester Cathedral, we were asked to emphasise that Joan of Arc is not buried in Winchester Cathedral, nor is there a shrine. Do not go to Winchester Cathedral expecting to see her grave - but do go to see the very fine memorial, as well as where Jane Austen and many famous kings and bishops are buried.
