A Conversation for Pencil Cases

Wooden pencil cases

You don't mention the old-fashioned wooden type, that had two layers and a sliding lid. The top layer was made in two parts; one to contain pencils and the other to contain the eraser. The upper pencil tray swivelled to allow access to the bottom layer, while the eraser compartment was fixed, thus allowing the whole unit to 'lock' when the lid was slipped into place. Oh dear, this is proving very difficult to get across in words - in this instance, a picture really would be worth a thousand of them! Anyhow, people who remember them will know exactly what I'm talking about, and people who are too young can go ask their Grandmas....

I inherited one of those from my mum, and it was very popular at my school because of its uniqueness!

They help to build upper body strength as it takes a Herculean effort to cart the damn heavy things about as well.

Only slightly less dangerous than metal rulers and long pointy compasses.

Why did people in times past arm their children with such formidable weapons in the classroom?
