A Conversation for The Mathematics Behind Digital Technology

It seems a long time since we played warped, scratched and dusty vinyl records

Well, er, no - actually. In fact it's about ten minutes. And I was just gobsmacked by how totally fantastic it sounded. As it happens, I work for a company that makes the best digital sound systems in the world. I have one such, which I love.

But sometimes there's just nothing like getting a well-loved bit of plastic out of its old patchouli-stained sleeve and giving it one more whirl... smiley - smiley

Hi kris, and welcome to h2g2 smiley - smiley

I was forced to put my turntable in the loft many years ago, and I'm really missing the tactile experience of playing vinyl. You've convinced me to dig it all out again smiley - smiley

smiley - cheers Icy

Hi Icy,
I actually registered as a researcher many moons ago - when the sadly missed DNA was still with us, and before H2G2 moved to the BBC. Never contributed much, I'm afraid, but have been a keen spectator and proselytizor for H2G2 thereafter. Over the years I've probably sent more links to H2G2 articles to friends than any other site. Glad to see that H2G2's future now appears to be in good hands, and hope it all works out - it's a unique thing.

Re your turntable, how were you "forced" to put it in the loft? At gunpoint? That's about the only way I'd do it. Not that I'm that butch or anything... My wife rules 90% of the livingroom space with an iron hand, but my music system is my little sacred zone.

One thing I love about vinyl is that there's just so much music in there to discover. I've got a few hundred albums, and every time I improve my turntable I end up going through many of them, just amazed at stuff that I'd never heard or understood before.

So go and get that turntable out of the attic, and some of your favourite albums (which I hope you have also kept!) If it's a decent one, consider getting it serviced and set up properly. I guarantee you won't regret it. smiley - winkeye

smiley - grr...and if you want to get fighting mad: compare your vinyl to a digitally remastered new version of the same recording.
I used to believe those horrorshow K-Tel "Golden Hour" LPs were compressed to zero dynamics...little did I know!
OK, you can´t get an mp3 player to sound like your big stereo - so CDs are compressed to a faretheewell and your stereo sounds like an mp3 player.
If that´s progress I don´t need any.
