Besides Franz "Der Kaiser" Beckenbauer both Germany and Bayern München (Munich) needed someone to score. This job was perfectly done by Gerd Müller. As I am too young to know many details about the two of them I cannot tell a lot. But it was the pair of them who made Germany become World champion in 1974. Furthermore, Müller is still the German top-scorer. He scored 40 goals (in 34 matches) in one season.

P.S. In the late 60s there was another popular German player named Stan Libuda. Thank God, Germany was stopped in Mexico 1970. Otherwise you would have to call me Stan . Anyway, people said "An Gott kommt keiner vorbei - außer Libuda" (Nobody could get past God - except Libuda).

The one-dimensional Muller was a fox-in-the-box and a half. Completely anonymous anywhere except in front of goal, Der Bomber scored 68 goals in 62 games for West Germany. Surely it's an unequalled goals-per-game ratio at international level.
