Tram lines on Green Lanes?

Post 1

As you come out of Manor House tube and walk up the right hand side of Green Lanes towards Sainsburys, within a few steps on your right there is a cobbled yard with train tracks leading off the street.
Does anyone know what these tracks were used for? Did there used to be tram lines on Green Lanes? If so, why did a section of track lead off the street? Were they maybe used for some commercial purpose?

I have no idea myself, but now that you mention it, it would be fantastic to have a tram line running up Green Lanes these days! Especially with the new Arena Shopping Park (a monstrosity which I will personally avoid) bringing hundreds of new visitors to that junction, traffic is a huge issue. Bus lanes are clogged on weekends, and I've walked from Salisbury Rd. to Manor House faster than a bus or car on a Saturday afternoon.

That's not quite correct, The Building used to be the Eastern Divisional Office of London Transport, but previous to that belonged to the Metropolitan Electric Tramways, responsible for the operation of trams in and for the County of Middlesex. The track was used to enable stores trams to deliver goods to the building, as well as pushing a defect tram out of the way until it could be repaired. After the take over by London Transport, the siding was mainly used to park a snow broom tram in winter.

Most of the trams in the area were replaced by Trolleybuses in 1938, leaving only Tram Route 33, Manor House to West Norwood via the Kingsway Subway and Westminster, to survive until March 1952. The tram track into the back of the building was also in use until 1952.
