Sqush can do more harm than good?

I got into squash at college and played with a lot of people with limited experience, some never playing before etc... and what I find in these learning games with no real coaching that as soon as you get a feel for the ball injuries start. The amount of times I have left with a round bruise somewhere on my body from a very powerfull but badly aimed shot is becoming uncountable. A few more injuries which are the result of an overswung racket. I know that if you follow the rules and are carefull these injuries shouldn't happen but despite everybody I have played with having this knowledge they still occur.
Am I just playing with idiots or plain unlucky or is this normal?
