One of my chemistry lecturers told us the story of Nobel, and how he actully suffered from angina (a heart condition characterised by chest pain) and found that nitroglycerine alleviated the symptoms. Indeed, it is still used today for angina, my gran puts a nitro patch on her chest every day!
