Advertising the Un-Advertisable - Motherhood and Apple Pie
Created | Updated Jun 17, 2011
The authors are responding to the Post Writing Challenge of advertising the un-advertisable. As usual, they paid no attention to the instructions. (So what else is new?)
As usual, the results are gratifying. Rules be darned.
As usual, we repeat the instructions – not because anybody pays attention to them – but just as a general reference.
Write, compose, draw or even film an ad. But – and here's the kicker – it has to be something you can't BUY. Something intangible but necessary, such as peace, math ability, or a decent sense of humour. You may OFFER TO SELL this commodity, but only in an impractical way. Take your payment in smileys, hugs, or guru sweat-equity, whatever.
And now…
Minorvogonpoet has obviously given the idea of advertising a lot of thought (unlike the rest of us).
In this offering, MVP tackles the most pernicious form of advertising: political propaganda. We are enlightened.
The only problem is that I can't figure out which party she's pulling for. – DG
Motherhood and Apple Pie
We promise a new society. A society that values the things that you value: you, the people of this great nation. Above all, you value your families and place them at the very centre of your life, around your television. You want your children to grow up in a society that is peaceful, free and provides ice cream for all. And you know the importance of the mother in caring for her children, nurturing them and teaching them how to use a washing machine. So we will create a society in which motherhood is cherished and promoted. We will ensure that mothers have all the help they need, that they feel valued, and that they can buy cosmetics on the internet.
We promise a society in which home life is valued. We want our citizens to feel safe and comfortable in their homes and communities. You should be able to go shopping in your supermarket and know that the food you buy is clean, healthy and tasteless. You should be able to provide your children with decent food at a reasonable price. You should be able to put roast turkey and apple pie on the table, with lashings of cream, and see your children put on weight.
The family is the cornerstone of society and the nation. If we build a nation of strong and healthy families, we build a strong and healthy nation. A nation of people who are confident, tolerant and good consumers. Vote for a healthy nation. Vote for us.
