Just thought I'd drop you a note...
I live in Mersea, though I'm at Uni in York at the moment, and am more than sure that the island is more than 5 square miles in area!! Considering that it's about 3 by 5 miles, and oval, I'm sure it must be about 9? Not entirely sure though.

I've lived there 20 years, and I've never heard about an ambulance being brought onto tha island before high tide in case. There surely wouldn't be much point if we couldn't get off the island! We tend to rely on the Essex Air Ambulance and the coast guard in case of an emergency when the Strood is covered.

Very interesting summary of life on the Island - (and in a true Mersyite spirit) "yay" for all those non-grockles!

They used to bring the ambulance over when we didn't have the island defib unit or the air ambulance. That info is a little out of date, I think they still do it with Fire engines for very high spring tides though.

I have to admit that I had a quick skim through where you've been on this site so that I don't take too much for granted. It appears you went to CCHS, which if you travelled by bus would probably mean we at least recognise each other if not know each other as I went to St Bens and am only a couple of years older than you.

If you've looked on my page you'll see that although I'm a true Mersea-ite at heart I am currently in France on my year out.

Anyway I want to dash off soon and have many convos to read and forget so I best leave you for a while. I'll get onto the Eds to fix that area thing though.

I knew the O'Connors, Jane was one of my best friends, Mel isn't my real name but it fitted in with Cat, Nin and Bec. Oh the childish things that we used to do and think they were cool

I almost went to Grenoble until I found out the company was English speaking which wouldn't exactly have helped my French!

Jane is lovely - I met her only a couple of times at the Hole in the Wall, while she was back from Uni. Well done for chosing the company that speaks French not English btw - I'd be tempted to go to the English speaking one! I'm so scared about going I have mixed motives for going, but mainly because my French is so poor that I don't think I'm going to learn any other way! I'm not doing an industrial placement, but I'm spending a year at the uni there - erk!

You will have the most amazing time. There are a load of people here doing exactly that and they're loving it. You'll need to sort out with your bloke before you go how you're going to keep in contact. My bloke phones me each evening from his mobile using his free minutes and a special card (an Alpha Euro card I think it's called) it works out really cheap
