As snotty undergraduates, myself and a friend set of with the idea of a witty post-modernist piece (I for the Poly newspaper) of claptrap that would poke fun at him. (I hasten to add this was before his illness became general knowledge-we were not that callous).
He was such a thoroughly decent bloke that we were of course defeated in this. Of course, our editor was less than impresseed with our Roy Castle thoroughly decent bloke article and it was never published. So ended a burgeoning career in the print media, but at least we 'did the right thing', I like to think.

I met him once too, in the early 80s. He came out of the back of a building in Minehead to go to his car. We just happened to be in the car park at the time. Even though he was in a rush, he spent a good 10 minutes talking to my family before he left. As kids, this was awe inspiring as we liked him a lot.
Truly a great man. The world could do with more people that are half as great as he was.
