I am sorry that I cannot provide the details except from my distant memory, BUT ....
Carbon 12 is also generated from the interaction of carbon (as CO2) in the upper atmosphere with cosmic rays. And later is incorporated into wood and subsequently dirt where it is available for analysis as "carbon dating".
Carbon dating is only useful for the 'shorter' geological time scales, and as such relies on the assumption that carbon 12 levels are static - an assumption that has not been proven as far as I know.

measuring atmospheric levels over a period of time would be a start.
Time machine would put the issue beyond debate, any one have one that I can borrow?
