I was once taught simple probability using naught and crosses (or Xs and Os as it is sometimes called). Each square was asigned a number of importance (corner has three possibilities, side has two, centre has four). The student is asked to asign changing numbers to the squares according to different stages of play. Always chosing the highest number out of the possible squares provides the probability of winning or a tie. A simple formula can be written by the student.
