Yes, you are correct, your views ARE filtered through the sensibilities of an avid Kanno otaku. You are also correct in that you are completely right.
I didn't know anyone else even knew about Yoko Kanno. I have all of her soundtrack albums, except for the second Macross Plus CD. My roommate has the stuff she's done with Maaya Sakamoto.

In the american version/translation of "Iron Chef" (a japanese competative cooking television show), on several occasions I've heard music commposed by Yoko Kanno, mostly from macross plus, but I think I may have also heard some music from Escaflowne (but, don't quote me on that one...)
