Ah, but at least a few of them have been directly called 'assistant' - Jo Grant and Peri for starters.

Jo *was* an assistant, hired by UNIT when he was Earth-bound, but she's an exception. The ones who traveled with him are more correctly called "Companions". His granddaughter was certainly more of a companion than an assistant...
