The h2g2 Poem - Starocracy

Starocracy
With tear-bright eyes they watch the rocket go.
All hail the hero in the silver craft!
Baptised Kon-Tiki, like the ancient raft
Adrift among the stars, bathed in their glow
A lifeless, cold, and inhumane tableau.
Out further now than man has ever been -
The pilot drops his Playboy magazine
Stares at the planets spinning by below.
But suddenly, a blip appears on screen,
Curves up, grows large, a UFO draws nigh.
A flashing light, a hailing frequency
A voice with rough translation by machine:
No ifs or buts, step out, I want your key.
Your species isn't registered to fly.
