When the question is along the lines of:
'so you wanna come over to my place and ...'
and the asker of the 'delicate' question is located on the wrong side of you [in your deaf spot] resulting in you accidentially ignoring it.
Rule 1 can bite. 
As one who has been deaf in one ear For life, and has reduced hearing in the other From life. 
I can really relate to the article - well done.
