A Conversation for Good Put-downs

Peta

Apparently when Lady Astor (?) met Jean Harlow, Jean Harlow explained that the last letter of her name was silent and received the response 'I see, as in Harlot?'

Peta I do believe that it was Margot Asquith and it is indeed one of the great put downs of all time. Her first name was pronounced Mar-Got instead of Mar-Go by Jean Harlow, and the riposte was as you said "the "t" is silent, as in "Harlow"."

She apparrently disliked Lord Kitchener greatly and once remarked that "if he was not a great man, he was, at least, a great poster".
