A Conversation for Cheesman's Gerbils

If you are going to use an aquarium anyway...

You should turn it into a gerbilarium by using peat in it. Mixed with various other things that I can't quite remember now (been a long time since I had gerbils) it's ideal for them. They can make burrows in it, which is more natural for them, and if you put black paper down the sides of the tank, it's possible they will make their burros right up against the glass, so that you can peep at them. It also only need cleaning out twice a year.

The disadvantages are - it's a hell of a job when you do clean it, (but is' great for the garden), and the gerbils aren't so easy to catch if you haven't made sure that they are really tame before you do this.
