Nice theory for the origin of the name.
Weighed against it is the fact that many towns & cities have their own Charing X's, which seem to be associated with wool & cloth making; Malcom Atkin writes: "Charing Cross - 'Shearing Cross' - was the place around which medieval cloth cutters and shearers would gather hoping for employers to give them work" (Norwich, History and Guide).
