Finsbury Park station -- a query

I was always under the impression that the pistol design on the Finsbury Park platform walls referred to the fact that Hornsey Wood was traditionally a popular place for duels to take place.

Surely if it referred to Arsenal FC, the design would feature cannons rather than pistols? (Their nickname isn't The Musketeers, after all. smiley - smiley )

Hmmm... actually I'm not sure either way now. Arsenal are also associated with pistols - the player of the year award was traditionally a revolver until quite recently. Had they been The Musketeers, they would probably be associated with swords anyway (something else that makes no sense, I know...)

The pistols on the platforms arrived with the Victoria line at the end of the 1960s, so they could be there for either reason smiley - erm

It might be my memory playing tricks, but doesn't the pistol design have a couple of trees -- or something similar, suggesting the duelling-in-the-woods interpretation -- in the background?

I'm intrigued now. I used live near Finsbury Park, and I still travel that way sometimes -- next time I use the station I'll have a closer look.

I've done some research - you're right, it is to do with the duelling smiley - ok

Thanks for getting back. smiley - smiley Yes, I've been reading around a little too and I'm pretty sure the Arsenal thing is wrong.

It's so long since I worked on a Guide entry that I can't remember the procedure for updates. I seem to recall that it takes an awfully long time and changes have to be submitted to someone-or-other smiley - erm for approval first. Anything I can do to help? Or do you just refer them to this thread and ask them to incorporate the new info?

I don't think I'll be able to find enough new information for a complete update of the entry, but I'll get the changes made using the <./>Feedback-Editorial</.> system. smiley - ok

I will go to my grave denying it. smiley - winkeye

Many thanks for getting them to add my name to the researcher list. It's the first edited guide credit I've had in nearly five years, and I'd forgotten what a nice feeling it is. Tho' I'm almost embarrassed since I only contributed one measly little line. smiley - smiley

Cheers, Lear
