...but, like (sad as this may seem)...isn't remembering the formula just easier? Specially if you've used it ooodles of times. It's not immediately intuitive, true, but it's the outcome of completing the square on the general form of the quadratic, so learning to derive it has the two advantages that it familiarises people with completing the square, and also that the formula becomes more memorable.
